Analysis of diurnal, seasonal, and annual distribution of urban sub-hourly to hourly rainfall extremes in Germany

Abstract The timing of short extreme rainstorm, which was usually thought to occur on midsummer afternoons, investigated improve future mitigation options for infrastructure and safety from localised flash flooding. Using a peak-over-threshold approach, the 10- 60-min events filtered high-resolution rainfall series assessing diurnal, seasonal, annual distributions analysed spatial variations prevailing atmospheric circulation types (CTs). diurnal distribution showed clear deviation that entire regime. A complex pattern identified with distinct signatures storms in northern (mostly afternoon) southern regions (a bimodal second peak early morning) Germany more homogenous across central regions. Most occurred summer, but 42% 10-min outside summer months (June–July–August). clustering extremes identified, varied distinctly between extremes, indicating sub-hourly hourly were far running conterminously. time scales not dominated by occurrence specific CTs most cases, suggesting other factors control these extremes.
